In the fifth of her highly acclaimed Weetzie Bat books, Francesca Lia Block delves into the early life of Dirk MacDonald. Dirk, whom readers first met in Weetzie Bat, has always known he was gay. Struggling with what it means to be different, he ultimately learns to accept — and love — himself for who he is. "Block's writing, always passionate, dazzles here...[she] displays brilliant, original vision that makes all her books unforgettable." Synopsis:

Everyone has a story to tell ...

Dirk McDonald's life was almost perfect. He lived with this grandmother, Fifi, in a beautiful gingerbread cottage in Hollywood. He had the beach, and his surfboard, and Fifi's red-and-white 1955 Pontiac convertible.

But Dirk wasn't happy. Inside, he was harboring a deep, dark secret. And he was afraid that if he admitted it to anyone - even Fifi - he would never be accepted again.

Then one night, Dirk's magic lamp came to life. Suddenly, all the stories from Dirk's past came flowing out of it. On that night, his life changed forever. At last, Dirk learned who he really was, and that any love that is love is right.

A remarkable little book. It is the fifth and last book in Ms. Block's Weetzie Bat series, and is really a prequel to the first, Weetzie Bat. The characters Dirk and Duck were introduced in the first book, already a couple. In Baby Be-bop, the story centers around pre-Weetzie Dirk who is simply a teenage boy in search of love from another boy but unable to find it. He sees it in a dream but, considering the world around him, he is skeptical of it becoming a reality. It is his search, which leads him in many directions before finding his destination -- some of which are not so nice. Ms. Block never shies away from the hard knox of life.

Ms. Block creates a world for young adults which is a mixture of magic and reality. Her writing is poetic, descriptive, moving, and fun by turns. One is tempted to compare these works to The Little Prince in that it is primarily for children, but can also enthrall and astound adults with its observations and emotional content.

I first read Baby Be-bop on a plane flight, having found it by accident on a used-book shelf. I was moved, touched, amused, and enlightened.
