Michelle Wildgen: IMG A Few Initial and Not-Comprehensive Meditations on Group Novels

I am a sucker for a book about a group. What reminded me of this was Joanna Smith Rakoff's A Fortunate Age, her homage to Mary McCarthy's endlessly re-readable... Continue »

The Reformed Vampire Support Group

by Catherine Jinks

The Reformed Vampire Support Group Cover

Staff Pick

Not all vampires are glamourous; nor do they all ooze sex appeal — that's the premise of Catherine Jinks's latest YA novel, where a group of disparate vampires make the decision to stop killing humans. Obviously, such a course of action will not be easy, and our acrimonious lot decide to form a support group to help each overcome the many temptations and pitfalls that may befall them. But when one of their group is mysteriously turned to ashes, the group realises that they will have to put their differences aside and unite against this new threat. Will they be able to work together for the common good? The Reformed Vampire Support Group is a well-paced page turner; and that, coupled with Jinks's excellent tongue-in-cheek prose, will keep most readers glued until the very last page.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Think vampires are romantic, sexy, and powerful? Think again. Vampires are dead. And unless they want to end up staked, they have to give up fanging people, admit their addiction, join a support group, and reform themselves.

Nina Harrison, fanged at fifteen and still living with her mother, hates the Reformed Vampire Support Group meetings every Tuesday night. Even if she does appreciate Dave, who was in a punk band when he was alive, nothing exciting ever happens. That is, until one of group members is mysteriously destroyed by a silver bullet. With Nina (determined to prove that vamps aren't useless or weak) and Dave (secretly in love with Nina) at the helm, the misfit vampires soon band together to track down the hunter, save a werewolf, and keep the world safe from the likes of themselves.

The perfect anecdote to slick vampire novels, this murder-mystery comedy of errors will thrill fans of Evil Genius.

Review:

"Jinks offers some wry vampire-centric twists on mystery conventions...and when the humor hits its mark, this can be laugh-out-loud funny." Booklist
