Publisher Comments:

Released for the first time in trade paperback, this is the classic tale of four men caught in a primitive and violent test of manhood.

The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the states most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. And then, in a moment of horror, the adventure turns into a struggle for survival as one man becomes a human hunter who is offered his own harrowing deliverance.

Synopsis:

Dickey's bestselling novel of four men caught in a violent test for manhood was produced as a blockbuster film starring Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight. A canoe trip down a wild North Georgia river turns into a primitive nightmare that will leave one man dead--and three men changed forever. "A brilliant and breathtaking adventure".--The New Yorker.

I chose Deliverance as the best book I read in the past decade because it made me feel the way I do every time I read the greatest book of all time, The Great Gatsby, and that is euphoric. And it gave me euphoria through beautiful, precise language that took me inside the heart of the narrator so that I felt and experienced vicariously the experiences he described using all the right details in all the right amounts. I felt like I was there, and it was an interesting, poignant, wonderful, horrible, sublime place to go. At the end, I, too, felt temporarily delivered from the mundane, as if it was I who had gone away for the weekend, been given the chance to survive or die, and ... rose to the challenge or tragically failed. But you'll have to read the book to find out which way it ends. You'll emerge breathless and soul-fed.
