Publisher Comments:

There's a lot of career advice out there. Much of it dumb. But what if someone read all the advice books — over a hundred years' worth — and put all the good ideas in one place? Could you finally escape the cube? Stop mailing things? Be happier?

In How to Be Useful, Megan Hustad dismantles the myths of getting ahead and helps you navigate the murky waters of office life. Humorous yet wise, irreverent yet marvelously practical, this book will help you learn

Why "just being yourself" is a terrible idea.

How to be smart, but not too smart.

Why you shouldn't be "nice."

When not to be good at your job.

How to screw up with grace and dignity.

Why shoes matter.

The right and wrong ways to talk trash about yourself.

That ambition, practiced wisely, is a noble thing.

Review:

Very soon, despite the difficulty of job hunting in tough economic times, newly minted graduates will march into Day One of their first real jobs. They will arrive a little nervous and a little plagued by doubt.

With some luck, these neophytes might meet with someone like Megan Hustad. She would likely be well dressed but not in a loud or distinctive way. The look itself would be... Washington Post Book Review (read the entire Washington Post review)

This is a more entry level angle, but the genius of it is that she's a snarky young thang who sits down with every management book (Seven Habits of yada yada) and distills and analyzes their points in a way that won't make you snooze.

For people with older managers, it shows you where they're coming from, for people managing younger folks, it shows you what they're thinking of where you're coming from.

I was flat out befuddled that a manager kept asking me 'out for a latte' until I read this book and realized it was a common piece of advice in the 80s to get your employee to open up and feel pampered. Har har.
