Synopses & Reviews
Dream Country is the third volume in the story of
The Sandman.
The four short stories in Dream Country all revolve around ancient and near-forgotten myths. The acclaimed story "A Midsummer Night's Dream," in which William Shakespeare puts on a play for the Faerie folk and for the Sandman, won the 1991 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story, the first such honor bestowed upon a comic book. Also includes Gaiman's own script for the story "Calliope," in which a frustrated writer holds a Muse named Calliope hostage.
Review
"One of [Neil] Gaiman's personal favorites is the story of Shakespeare's performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' for the Sandman and the Fairy Queen. This issue [collected in Dream Country] won the 1992 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story, an honor usually reserved for works of prose fiction. This, said Gaiman, 'put one more nail in the coffin
of the idea that comics are for children and sub-literates.'" San Diego Union-Tribune
Review
"Neil's Sandman work is on a par with great literature. I remember finishing issues of Sandman and just sitting there trying to catch my breath, saying, 'What a ride this guy has taken me on.' And I'd add, 'how brilliantly clever'....In each generation there are a small number of talents who do the seminal work that influences everyone else. Neil is one of those talents." Harlan Ellison, author of Edgeworks

"Along with all else, Sandman is a comic strip for intellectuals and I say it's about time." Norman Mailer
Review
"Neil Gaiman is, simply put, a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him in any medium." Stephen King
