Michelle Wildgen: IMG A Few Initial and Not-Comprehensive Meditations on Group Novels

I am a sucker for a book about a group. What reminded me of this was Joanna Smith Rakoff's A Fortunate Age, her homage to Mary McCarthy's endlessly re-readable... Continue »

Across the Nightingale Floor: Tales of the Otori, Book One Cover

Staff Pick

The first in a trilogy, Across the Nightingale Floor is being compared with the likes of the Pullman Trilogy, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings — and rightly so. It is easily the best fantasy novel I've read in quite a while. The story line follows Takeo and Kaede, who are each torn from their families in a time of persecution bordering on war, only to discover that their fate is bound to a purpose higher than they ever could have imagined. It's an amazing story, beautifully written, and sort of like a Japanese Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Publisher Comments:

In his black-walled fortress at Inuyama, the warlord Iida Sadamu surveys his famous nightingale floor. Constructed with exquisite skill, it sings at the tread of each human foot. No assassin can cross it unheard.

The youth Takeo has been brought up in a remote mountain village among the Hidden, a reclusive and spiritual people who have taught him only the ways of peace. But unbeknownst to him, his father was a celebrated assassin and a member of the Tribe, an ancient network of families with extraordinary, preternatural skills. When Takeo's village is pillaged, he is rescued and adopted by the mysterious Lord Otori Shigeru. Under the tutelage of Shigeru, he learns that he too possesses the skills of the Tribe, and with this knowledge he embarks on a journey that will lead him across the nightingale floor and to his destiny within the walls of Inuyama.

Overcome by the intensity of first love and conflicted by split loyalties and his own divided nature, Takeo realizes that he must make his own way on this journey of revenge and treachery, honor and loyalty, betrayal and love.

Review:

"Mystical powers and martial arts rampage through this pseudo-Japanese story...with an abandon that's head spinning....However, for those looking for something with a bit of depth, the author tends to gloss over the details of why and how....Hopefully, the next book will show what Hearn is really capable of." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"This first novel, a series opener, brings a fantasy Japan to vivid life with a minimum of frills. A good addition to most fantasy collections." Library Journal

This book was stunning, the expression of the characters and the descriptions of the honour of the warriors was immaculately described and the plot just came to life. This especially when the author was describing Kaede's frailty and her asonishment at seeing her reflectio for the first time. Everyone has to read this!
