Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This powerful, action-packed memoir puts readers into the middle of the Battle of the Bulge and the Allies' legendary fighting force known as the Screaming Eagles. Along the way, Burgett, just 19 at the time of the battle, vividly captures some of the most horrific action of World War II.

As a self described World War II history buff, I am immensely interested in the exploits of the 101st Airborne Division and the famed screaming Eagles. The story of what our soldiers endured at Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge is one that all should be familiar. No where does the phrase "the cost of freedom is high" ring truer than in those Belgian woods.

What sets this book apart is the way author Donald Burgett makes the reader "FEEL" what it was like to be a part of the incredible hardship that was the Battle of the Bulge. Burgett paints word pictures that almost make you feel what he felt and even smell what he smelled facing war at it most brutal. The sacrifices these young soldiers faced are hard to believe.

I especially liked the character development of the men that Burgett served with - he made you feel as if you knew them as well.

Burgett is an exceptional story teller and historian of the first degree. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what our soldiers had to endure to secure the freedoms that we enjoy today.
