Jesse Bullington: IMG Abash'd the Devil Stood

I don't believe in evil. It's a word I use, certainly, because words are shortcuts and we all take the short way round from time to time, but that's... Continue »

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

From acclaimed author Robin McKinley — a mesmerizing novel of supernatural desire...

"Her feet are already bleeding — if you like feet..."

There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while.

Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don't, when they're vampires.

They took her clothes and sneakers. They dressed her in a long red gown. And they shackled her to the wall of an abandoned mansion — within easy reach of a figure stirring in the moonlight.

She knows that he is a vampire. She knows that she's to be his dinner, and that when he is finished with her, she will be dead. Yet, when light breaks, she finds that he has not attempted to harm her. And now it is he who needs her to help him survive the day...

Review:

"Fabulous, fascinating, and a whole lot of fun. Step into Robin McKinley's thrilling, beautifully described world, where you will meet some interesting vampires and a lady who can deal with the creatures of the night." Jayne Ann Krentz

Review:

"I had no idea that blood and dessert could go together so well. I loved it!" Amber Benson, "Tara" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Review:

"A gripping, funny, page-turning, pretty much perfect work of magical literature that exists more or less at the unlikely crossroads of Chocolat, Interview With the Vampire, Misery, and the tale of Beauty and the Beast." Neil Gaiman, bestselling author of American Gods and creator of The Sandman

Review:

"Most of the charm of this long venture into magic maturation derives from McKinley's keen ear and sensitive atmospherics, deft characterizations and clever juxtapositions of reality and the supernatural..." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"McKinley opens new territory on the vampire range....I can't put her books down while I'm reading them, and...[they] carry me along for a good while after. I hope she writes more about Sunshine and her world..." Grey Walker, Green Man Review

Synopsis:

Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course she wouldn't, when they're vampires. A new direction for an already successful fantasy author.

Synopsis:

In her first novel for adults, the Newbery Medalist and bestselling author pens an exciting, beautifully written, erotic addition to the popular vampire genre. "A gripping, funny, page-turning, pretty much perfect work of magical literature."--Neil Gaiman.

Vampires in an urban setting, the protagonist a baker who doesn't know she can wield magic, an eccentric landlady who turns out to know more than you'd suspect- this is a great story! The intricate details of the urban fantasy world McKinley created kept me riveted. I really liked the juxtaposition of magic and technology, and the contrast of the two main characters- one who embodied light, the other darkness. How they found themselves working together, when by nature they would be totally repelled by each other. I really wish there was a sequel.

I've enjoyed reading Robin McKinley for years now; but found myself pleasantly shocked by this book. Far more urban and contempory than her usual fantasy books; it still continues her long list of strong but not perfect, real but with a twist, heroines.

I also appreciated that the climatic fight at the end took up very little of this book. Too many science fiction and/or fantasy books get caught up in the big Lord of the Ring battles and forget to tell us about who is fighting the battles. Most of this book is about Sunshine, as she prepares herself for the coming battle, and as she comes to terms with all the different parts of herself.

A good page-turner. Much recommended.

This book pretty much has it all: vampires, motorcycles, an utterly convincing world, and a sarcastic baker with hidden powers. I loved it to bits, and I really hope that McKinley chooses to revisit this setting. Her characterization really shines -- all of the characters, even relatively minor ones, feel like real people who have lives beyond what she's told us about them. My only minor quibble is that the Big Bad Villain, a master vampire, spends so much time offstage that I sometimes didn't have as much of a sense of danger as I should have. The story is really about Sunshine and her struggles, though, so I can't complain too much. I would recommend this novel to pretty much everyone, even people who don't necessarily tend to like "vampire novels."
