Comparative Central European Holocaust Studies (Comparative Cultural Studies)by Louise O. Vasvari and Steven T
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:The work presented in the volume in fields of the humanities and social sciences is based on 1) the notion of the existence and the "describability" and analysis of a culture (including, e.g., history, literature, society, the arts, etc.) specific of/to the region designated as Central Europe, 2) the relevance of a field designated as Central European Holocaust studies, and 3) the relevance, in the study of culture, of the "comparative" and "contextual" approach designated as "comparative cultural studies." Papers in the volume are by scholars working in Holocaust Studies in Australia, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Serbia, the United Kingdom, and the US. Book News Annotation:In the opening translation of Jewish Hungarian Holocaust
survivor/Nobel laureate in literature Imre Kertész's Europe's
Oppressive Legacy (2008), he remarks that the new democracies of
Central and East European--where the Holocaust largely took
place--are confronting old national wounds. Vasvári (New York U.) and
Tötösy de Zepetnek (communication studies, U. of Halle-Wittenberg,
Germany) introduce 14 essays treating the Nazi era and continuing
antisemitism in these countries' nonfiction and fiction rather than
in American and West European representations and from gender
perspectives. A bibliography of European women's Holocaust life
writing in English is discussed, including a reading of Ida Fink's
The Journey (1992).
