Voices from the Moon: Apollo Astronauts Describe Their Lunar Experiences

by Andrew Chaikin and Victoria Kohl

Voices from the Moon: Apollo Astronauts Describe Their Lunar Experiences Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

On July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made "one giant leap for mankind" as they became the first humans to walk on the moon. In Voices From the Moon Armstrong, Aldrin, and twenty-one other Apollo moon voyagers describe their other-worldly experiences in intimate detail for the first time. Andrew Chaikin's A Man on the Moon is considered the definitive history of the Apollo missions.

Now, using never-before-published quotes taken from his 150-plus hours of interviews with twenty-three of the twenty-four Apollo lunar astronauts, Chaikin and his collaborator Victoria Kohl have created an utterly unique account of the lunar missions.

Carefully choosing a selection of the astronauts' candid and deeply personal reflections, Chaikin and Kohl have shaped a stunning narrative that conveys the entire arc of the lunar journey. Through the astronauts' own words, Voices from the Moon captures the distinct personalities and remarkably varied perspectives of this brotherhood of men who have been to the edge of human experience.

Paired with the astronauts' recollections are more than 160 breathtaking images taken from NASA's new high-resolution scans of the photos the explorers took during their missions. Many of the photos, which are reproduced with unprecedented detail, have rarely — if ever — been seen by the general public. Celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, Voices from the Moon captures the magnificence of the Apollo program like no other book, and offers an extraordinary first-person chronicle of these defining moments in human history.
