Portland Farmers Market and Powell's BooksPartner to Offer Market Shoppers Books at Saturday PSU MarketApril 7, 2009, Portland, ORThe Portland Farmers Market and Powell's Books have partnered to provide Portlanders new and used books at Portland Farmers Market's PSU location. Powell's will set up a 10-foot by 20-foot booth featuring a curated selection of new and used books the last Saturday of each month, beginning April 25 through October 24. The collections will focus on topics that are relevant to the market season, for example seed gardening in the spring, barbequing in the summer, and preserving in the fall. "Two iconic Portland organizations are coming together to provide our shoppers a wonderful collection of books to help market-goers prepare and store the region's bounty and grow some of their own food," says Ann Forsthoefel, Portland Farmers Market executive director. "This partnership with Powell's provides resources to allow our community to get the most of out of the market throughout the spring, summer and fall, and to help build a vibrant local food economy." Michael Lamb, customer services manager of Powell's Books is also excited about the partnership, "The Portland Farmers Market and Powell's Books are a perfect match, bringing together two of Portland's greatest loves: food and books. Our participation in the farmers market is natural extension of our sustainability efforts and that is part of the reason why we'll offer used books at the market." Powell's Books at the Market
Throughout the summer, local authors will be stopping by the booth to sign and talk about their books. Also part of the partnership, Powell's will donate 10 percent of the gross sales to Portland Farmers Market, a 501(c)6 nonprofit, to help the organization fulfill its mission to operate vibrant farmers markets that contribute to the success of local food growers and producers, strengthen the food economy and serve as community gathering places. In addition to Powell's presence at the market, the Powells.com website will also host an aisle of books featured at the market and feature the Portland Farmers Market in its Portlander's page. (www.powells.com/Portland) Powell's shoppers will also receive a postcard entitled "Follow Your Bliss" that shows mass transit routes to and from Powell's and Portland Farmers Market.
